2010 Highlights

92nd Annual Convention Highlights, Celebrating Honors in Action

More than 3,600 representatives from 500-plus chapters gathered in Orlando in early April to celebrate Honors in Action and the 92nd Annual Convention of Phi Theta Kappa. In a whirlwind three days of excellence, attendees gained scholarly insights in the Honors in Action Academy and six rounds of Educational Forums; saw leadership in action as constituents elected International Officers, ACA and Alumni Advisory Council representatives; learned how engagement in service can make a difference; and met from members and advisors from all around the world.

Grand Opening and Marketplace:

Convention attendees visited the Senior Institution Transfer College Fair, roamed the streets of Scholarship Boulevard and Opportunity Avenue, shopped at Recognitions and the Chapter Marketplace, and marked their chapter home on a world map.

General Sessions:

  • Introduction of the new 2010/2011 Honors Study Topic, The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise, by Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs Susan Edwards and Keynote Speakers Dr. Rachel Maddow and Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
  • Remarks on the need for degree completion, by Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. Dr. Risley introduced Society alumnus and author Wes Moore, who spoke on his Phi Theta Kappa Experience, which included service as a chapter president and the opportunity to take the Leadership Development Studies Course.
  • Phi Theta Kappa Superheroes, the Presidential Address by 2009-2010 International President Edgar Romero
  • International Honorary Membership awarded to Dr. George Boggs, President of the American Association of Community Colleges and Vice Chair of the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors
  • Announcement that the second Hites Challenge goal was met, meaning a total $2 million scholarship endowment established in partnership with the Hites Family Community College Foundation.
  • Presentation of the Alliance for Educational Excellence Award to Keep America Beautiful
  • Annual presentation to the American Cancer Society, recognizing Phi Theta Kappa chapters. contributions to Relay For Life - $313,000 in 2009 and $2,769,412.40 since 2002.
  • Case Study Challenge Awards, for Case Studies from USA TODAY, based on the previous Honors Study Topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences. View winners.
